Food Ideas

There are many easy and cheap food items you can make or buy if you don’t have time to put together recipes for your backpacking meals. Some are obviously too heavy to take in large quantities, and some are meant for shorter trips or for cold weather trips. When you use energy backpacking or hiking, you need calories to help give you energy, so food with a significant amount of calories will be better. If you are going on a longer trip or want more gourmet meals you can use backpacking recipes.

Breakfast Backpacking Foods

  • Granola (with dried milk)
  • Fruit cocktail (small cans)
  • Instant oatmeal

Lunch Backpacking Foods

  • Bagels with cream cheese
  • Granola bars
  • Candy bars
  • Dried fruit
  • GORP (nuts, M&M’s raisins, crackers, dried fruit)
  • Crackers or Chips
  • Cheeses, like string cheese

    Good list. Found some new foods I hadn’t thought of. If I have a quick spontaneous trip I usually grab some cup-o-soup and instant oatmeal, but if I plan it out and its longer, I will usually bring some real food and use some recipes from this site. Thanks.
